GENERAL INFORMATION ABOUT ANNAPOLIS

Annapolis is a historic city that serves as Maryland’s capital and the county seat for Anne Arundel County.  Located at the mouth of Severn River (a major tributary to the Chesapeake Bay), Annapolis is convenient to both Baltimore and Washington, DC.  Notable as being home to the United States Naval Academy, the city is also famous for its steamed crabs and crab cakes, charming downtown historic district, and its prominent boating events and lifestyle, for which it has received its self-proclaimed title, “America’s Sailing Capital.”

Founded in 1649, colonial history abounds in Annapolis.  Few American cities have more surviving 18th Century buildings.  One example is the Maryland State House (built in the 1770s) which is the oldest state capital building in the United States that has been in continuous legislative use.  It was the location of several important events, including the ratification of the Treaty of Paris, ending America’s war for independence, and the venue where George Washington famously resigned his post as commander-in-chief of the Continental Army.  Annapolis even served as the temporary capital city for the United States for a period of nine months.

Today, as in the past, life in Annapolis is linked closely with the Chesapeake Bay.  The “City Dock” waterfront promenade and historic district is a popular spot for tourists and locals given the wide variety of restaurants, one-of-a kind boutique shops, and other attractions.

Zip Codes:  21401, 21402, 21403, 21404, 21405, 21409, 21411, 21412
