ABOUT CROWNSVILLE

Crownsville is a “bedroom community” in Anne Arundel County located just minutes north of Maryland’s historic capital, Annapolis.  Due to its proximity to the Severn River, Crownsville was for many years predominantly a summer destination for families visiting waterfront vacation cottages.  More recently there has been a surge in development of upscale home communities in the general Crownsville area, but even with the influx of many newer construction homes, Crownsville has retained a mostly rural feel.

Every fall Crownsville hosts the Maryland Renaissance Festival in a recreated 16th Century village set amongst 25 wooded acres.  It is the second largest Renaissance Festival in the country.  In addition, Crownsville is the location of the 67 acre Anne Arundel County Fairgrounds, the venue for a variety of events including Fair Week and the annual Kunta Kinte Festival.

Historically, Crownsville is perhaps most noteworthy for the Crownsville Mental Hospital Center (originally named “Hospital for the Negro Insane”) which was founded in 1910, integrated in 1962, and closed in 2004.  Many original buildings are still standing on the approximately 1,200 acre state-owned campus.  Although debate continues regarding future uses for the facilities and grounds, at least part of the property has already been legislatively preserved and protected from any development — the old hospital cemetery containing approximately 1,600 graves.  With most of the graves poorly marked by only small numbered headstones, historians only recently have begun to identify the names of all the individuals (mostly indigent black patients) interred at the hospital cemetery.  In 2004, a permanent marker was placed at the cemetery, “Dedicated to the Memory of the Beloved Residents Laid to Rest.”
