Home Buying Process: Preparing for Moving In

The reward to a successful settlement is home ownership.  At settlement all the keys will be turned over to the new home owner and the move-in process can begin.

In advance of the settlement, however, there are a number of preparatory steps new owners should take to facilitate the move-in process and get the property in a state that is ready to be lived in.

1) Making moving arrangements.

If you are planning to hire professional movers, it is advisable to get multiple estimates and make sure the moving company is properly bonded and/or insured.  Prudential Moving Services is a complimentary service that can assist you with this task.

2) Turning on the utilities

In most cases, new homeowners should contact local utility providers in advance of settlement to establish a “turn on” date and verify the date for billing to begin.  Prudential Home Connections is a free online service that allows new owners to instantly sign up with various home service providers and utilities.  Online rate comparisons are also available.

3) Meeting the challenges of home ownership

Along with the joys of home ownership there are also various responsibilities and hard work associated with maintaining and preserving the home.  Keeping up with regular maintenance with both enhance the enjoyment of the home and preserve its value.  Most experienced real estate agents will be able to serve as a good resource for recommendations of trusted home service providers and vendors.
